New Street Lights and Traffic Signal

The Cortez neighborhood will so be lit up. Currently, crews are laying conduit and foundations are being poured for approximately 155 street lights being installed between, 10th, A St, 5th, and Date.

Also, a much needed traffic signal at the intersection of Front & Cedar will be installed during July.

New Buildings/Projects Beginning

Cortez Hill Family Center: Two structures added to the existing 150-bed transitional housing facility totaling 1,600sf: 3-story building to provide connection between the existing structure and new building, and a 2-story new building containing a kitchen, dining room, staff offices, conference rooms, elevator, new stairways, landscaped courtyard, and children's play areas.  Southwest corner of Beech & Ninth. New Buildings Approved


Cosmopolitan SquareCosmopolitan Square was granted a development permit extension and design approval with a few deviations. The project is located on the block bounded by 7th, J St, 8th, and Island.

Seven buildings including the rehabilitation of three historical structures; 3- to 39-stories, 45’ to 478’ in height, 113 market rate condominium; 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom units; 12,350 square feet of retail; a 211-room hotel; 389 parking spaces plus 15 fire crew parking spaces in a 4-level underground garage.

This project is special is so many ways. The three existing historical buildings (Fire Station #4, Bledsoe Company Warehouse, Western Wholesale Drug Company Warehouse, commonly referred to as the Unicorn Antique Mall) will be retained and reconstructed into retail and office spaces, and condominiums with roof deck amenity spaces.

Four new buildings will be constructed within the block, one of which is a new 3-bay, 2-story  fire station with living quarters upstairs. The 8th Avenue Tower is a 11-story building with simple architecture. The 7th Avenue Townhomes are 3-stories with individual stoops onto the sidewalk.  And, finally, a 39-story contemporary, sleek glass structure reaching 478’ into the skyline.

The project incorporates courtyards, open spaces, eco-roofs, roof gardens and decks with active and passive spaces all within a truly urban project. The only thing missing is the pink glass! (East Village – Ballpark Neighborhood)


Ninth & BroadwayNinth & Broadway was granted design approval, a 17-story, 250-unit affordable housing building, comprised of 140 living units, 36 studios, and 74 one-bedroom units. There will be 120 parking spaces underground.

Amenities include 20,000 square feet of community space, an outdoor courtyard, a movie theater, and a kitchen. On the fifth floor, residents will enjoy an outdoor terrace and utility laundry facilities. On the 15th floor, is a large outdoor open space.

Incorporated in the building will be an eco-roof and photovoltaic panels. The developers are working towards a silver LEED certification.

On the ground floor will be 5,774 square feet of commercial space–2,000 square feet along 9th and approximately 3,800 square feet along Broadway.

The project will go before the Redevelopment Agency/City Council in July. (East Village – Upper West Quadrant)

Rob Wellington Quigley
In June, design approval was granted for Rob Wellington Quigley’s 416 13th, a 5-story building to be constructed on the west side of 13th mid-block. There will be two residential units and 2,671 square feet of office. (East Village – Lower East Quadrant)

New Downtown Park East Village Green West Park

Centre City Development Corporation on behalf of the City of San Diego Redevelopment Agency has purchased all the parcels needed to construct our newest Downtown park.

Provisionally named East Village Green West, the future park is located in the block bounded by G St, 14th, F St, and 13th. It's the smaller parcel on the left side of image.

Over the next year, a park needs assessment will be completed, a design team selected, and design documents drafted. The process will include public participation.

Also shown in image (right side) is the site anticipated to be East Village Green East. No plans for purchasing SDGE and Smart & Final sites at this time. - Last upadated February 2009.
